When eBay started, it was originally called Auctionweb started by Pierre Omidyar on September 3, 1995. He had the idea that marketplace auctions would work well online. So, he wrote the code for Autionweb and decided to test out his idea. He put it on the same server that had his personal website, on which he collected information about the ebola virus. He did not even create a new website for it. All he had to put on it was a broken laser pointer. It was just a test, so he figured it didn’t matter and so he was surprised when someone bought it for $14.83. He was so surprised, in fact, that he got ahold of the buyer to ensure they understood it was broken. The response was, "I'm a collector of broken laser pointers.”More details: Silicon Valley | History Of Ebay
